Bristol Forest Fires - Complete Coverage

Live WTNH Video Report:

BRISTOL BIG-TROUBLE

Live WTNH Helicopter Cam:

BRISTOL DOUBLE-TROUBLE

Hartford Courant:

BRISTOL — - About 50 firefighters from the city and three surrounding towns spent most of Thursday battling a pair of persistent brush fires on opposite ends of the city.

The most serious fire created dozens of small blazes in a 15- to 20-acre section of very steep woodland behind Matthews Street, and firefighters were still working into the night to extinguish pockets of burning brush there.

Nobody was hurt and no neighborhoods were evacuated, but fire commanders had to position several crews between the burning woods and houses along Matthews Street.

"I'm willing to lose the woods, but there's no way we'd lose a house," Chief Jon Pose said Thursday evening.

Pose and Mayor Art Ward issued a plea to city residents to be extremely careful to fully extinguish smoldering cigarette butts, matches and backyard grills during the current dry spell that has sharply elevated the risk of brush fires. Super-dry leaves and ground cover coupled with steady breezes make conditions hazardous, even for using outdoor fireplaces, Pose said. Ward said officials suspect the Matthews Street fire might have been triggered by someone burning brush or debris.

Crews from Burlington, Plymouth and Harwinton joined Bristol firefighters around mid-day to dig trenches and haul hoses up the steep ridge behind Matthews near Route 6. Trucks couldn't get close to the flames, so firefighters had to shuttle water up the hills in large bags.

At the end of Debra Lane in the city's northeastern corner, other crews worked through the afternoon to put out a separate brush fire. They were finishing up around 6 p.m.

Pose said he called for help from state firefighters, but they appeared to be stretched thin because of similar fires around the state. He also asked state police for a helicopter to make a water drop on a hard-to-reach section of the Matthews Street fire, but the helicopter wasn't flying.

Fire Weather Watches

Fire Weather Watches have been posted for much of the area. That includes most of NH, VT, CT, MA, and NY. A fire weather watch is issued when conditions are favorable for brush fires. A step above a Fire Weather Watch is a Red Flag Warning, which means that condiotions are extremely ripe for a brush fire or a wildfire. It has been dry around here for a while as we haven't had much measurable rain lately. The region is in a dry-spell, not a full-on drought. Because of these Fire Weather Watches and dry conditions, it is not recommended that you do any outdoor burning. It only takes one spark in these conditions to ignite a large fire. I'm thinking that our next good chance of a measurable rain event is going to be next Tuesday..stay tuned for more on that.

Extreme Fire Danger = Massive Brush Fire

Having been on scene of a massive brush fire all afternoon Saturday, I want to emphasize the extremely dry conditions. As I write this Sunday Morning, the raging fire continues to burn. Countless calls are coming in for unauthorized burning around town in Bristol, and that is highly prohibited, especially in these dry springtime months. Please use caution with any objects that could possibly light a fire. Here are the specifics from the ongoing fire on the Bristol/Burlington line:

Today's Fenway Forecast

It's Red Sox vs. Yankees at Fenway.

Saturday, April 12, 2008

Yankees at Red Sox (3:55PM) Forecast

It's the Yankees versus Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston...as the rivalry continues today, expect any shower or thunderstorm activity to end later this morning into the early afternoon. Game time conditions will be cloudy with temperatures in the mid to upper 50's. I am not expecting much if any precipitation to fall during the game, so we should be rain-delay free.

Prepare For The Weekend: Saturday

Here is your New England-wide GRAPHIXplus weather map. As you can see, northern & central New England will receive heavy morning rain, while southern New England escapes the fury with only periods of light rain. The northern Mid-Atlantic region will only see widely scattered showers. On the brighter side of things, the afternoon looks to be mostly cloudy with no precipitation. Hopefully the sun will peak out towards dinner time. As outlined below, we may peak 70 degrees for the high temperature.

Saturday's GRAPHIXplus Weather Map:

Latest Radar Loop - Incoming Rain

As you can see from this RadarPlus Platinum loop, the main batch of rain is well out to our West. The rain over Connecticut now is not reaching the ground, as the current dew point is only 34 degrees. We would need that to rise well into the 50's for precipitation to reach the ground-level surface. Updates ad the night progresses.

Thursday's Preview

Expect temperatures to soar to near 70 degrees on Thursday. Despite morning cloudiness, the afternoon will be mostly sunny. Keep in mind, any coastal areas are about 10 degrees colder than inland sections because of the chilly ocean water in the spring.

Extended Outlook GRAPHIX

Friday will be rainy. Some lingering showers/mist/drizzle will disturb the forecast for early Saturday, but partial clearing will take place in the afternoon. Look at the high temperatures for the coming days! We might soar well through the sixties later next week. As for the T.V. style graphic, well it is a preview of the BRAND NEW ICONS being worked on for the main website. I hope to have that updated soon with the new graphics, so hold on a few more days! Please comment this post if you like the new graphics set I've created...

Rainstorm Friday

A rainstorm will affect the region on Friday. While rain will not be excessive, it will help set the stage for potential major flooding in northern New England later this month. A brief period of snow or sleet is possible in NW MA and SW NH before changing to all rain quickly. We have several storms on the models, all of them giving us rain...stay tuned to the Precision Plus First Alert Blog for the latest on these storms and the potential flooding concerns they carry with them.
